Hi, I'm Sophia.

I'm a student at St John's Durham, studying Primary Education BA with QTS.

Through my experience working with children, I have spent hundreds of hours building relationships with students of different ages and abilities. I have thoroughly enjoyed mentoring students and experiencing their confidence grow over the course of our sessions. These experiences have also opened my eyes to the many ways in which children think and learn. Every child's mind is unique, and I understand that, for a child to reach their full potential and achieve their academic goals, they need a mentor who will invest the time in understanding their individual strengths and areas for improvement.

An important priority in all my lessons is consolidation. We spend the beginning of every lesson reviewing any new material or areas of difficulty from the previous lesson. This helps my tutees develop stronger long-term retention of key concepts, rather than relying solely on rote memorisation.

Each lesson is varied and personalised to keep learning engaging and enjoyable. Once I have got to know a student, I always try to incorporate their interests into our lessons, whether that means using Maths questions about cars for a petrolhead or creating English EAL activities around Harry Potter. You can see some examples of learning resources I have created for my students in the past here.

One of the comments I receive most often from my students is that my lessons are something they genuinely look forward to, while also noticing an improvement in their marks. Above all, I believe that the right encouragement at the right moment can shape the whole course of a child's education, and I look forward to potentially working with you in the future!
